Our position working at a grass-roots level with local charities and support groups across Devon for the last 25 years gives us unique insight into our local communities, the people who live there and the challenges they face. We use this experience and the expertise of our team to create a comprehensive set of research resources providing key information on topics from Devon’s fuel poverty to life in Ilfracombe. These are freely available for all voluntary and public sector organisations to use.
Our series of Needs Reports highlights the issues facing people living in Devon. Beyond the chocolate box image of the county, what challenges are people facing, what opportunities are there and how are voluntary sector organisations working to tackle disadvantage?
The DCF Needs Reports cover Education and Life Skills; Food Poverty; Fuel Poverty; Health and Wellbeing; Housing and Homelessness; Loneliness and Social Isolation; Poverty and Deprivation, and Voluntary and Community organisations. Written by DCF’s knowledge guru Nicola Frost, they give a statistical overview, explain how the situation in Devon relates to the national picture and dig deeper into the detail. Importantly, our reports tackle Devon as a whole, giving a countywide story which can be difficult to find in other research so often split between Devon, and the unitary authorities of Torbay and Plymouth.

The latest place-based research from the DCF Community Insight Team is in the form of a PAL, or Profile of Associational Life. This is a snapshot of the social fabric of individual towns in Devon – the buildings, organisations, clubs and societies, workplaces and more that bring together the people who live there. PALs support the work of the Positive People programme, of which our Community Insight Team is a part. They map out what is available in a community and the stories and feelings from people who live or work there, achieved by the team actually walking the areas in person and talking to local community members. So far, the PALs cover Okehampton, Ottery St Mary, Buckfastleigh, Barnstaple, Batsworthy Cross, Southway, Dawlish, Axminster, Parkham, Totnes, Bideford, Crediton, Kingsbridge, Ilfracombe, Cullompton, South Molton, Tavistock, Tiverton, Hemyock, Cranbrook, Ivybridge, and Holsworthy.
