Food INSECURITY

Since late 2020, DCF has been closely involved in a number of research and funding initiatives relating to food insecurity in Devon.

This page summarises some of those projects, and explains how they link with our grantmaking in this area, and our strategic priorities.

As a result, we have built up considerable insight and expertise in this area, as well as forming some close links with partners locally.

RESEARCH AND COMMUNITY KNOWLEDGE

We are closely involved in a number of research initiatives relating to food insecurity in Devon. We draw on our insight and expertise in this area to work alongside partners campaigning for sustainable, long-term approaches to food support systems.

Food for Thought

We were awarded just under £100,000 in funding from the UKRI’s Community Knowledge Fund, managed by the Young Foundation, to run Food for Thought.

The project linked young people and food producers in Devon and formed part of our work to develop a community-based understanding of local challenges, such as accessing sufficient healthy food.

CONVENING AND STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

Devon Food Partnership

Devon Food Partnership is hosted by Devon County Council but led by a variety of stakeholders covering the whole Devon geography (including Plymouth and Torbay) and all parts of the food system. Its aim is to ensure that nutritious, local, sustainably produced food is available and affordable for everyone in Devon. We have been involved with the partnership since its early days and our Head of Impact, Insight and Learning, Nicola Frost, was the inaugural chair of the partnership’s food insecurity working group.

INFORMED GRANTMAKING

Food, Fuel and More

We have worked with Devon County Council since late 2020 to distribute grants from the Household Support Fund allocated by central Government, with a recent focus on organisations providing food support to those least likely to access it through ‘conventional’ channels.

Through this funding we have made more than £1,163,900 worth of grants to voluntary and community organisations in DCC Devon.

Community Hubs for Food Security

Working in partnership with Devon County Council we are able to offer grants of up to £30,000 to organisations working to address food insecurity in Devon through collaborative, place-based models of support.

The two-year core grants are being made to develop new models of support, such as food clubs, social supermarkets or community kitchens, to be delivered from community hubs and/or schools.
