FOOD, FUEL AND MORE

This winter we have distributed more than £200,000 in grants to groups supporting people who are struggling to afford food, heating and other essentials.

Through our Food, Fuel and More fund, we awarded 15 small grants of up to £5,000 and nine large grants of up to £15,000 to groups working with households who find it difficult to access support elsewhere. The funding was aimed at alleviating immediate need, for example by providing food parcels or helping with fuel costs.

We worked with Devon County Council to distribute these grants from the Household Support Fund allocated by central Government.

The Food, Fuel and More fund is a targeted programme which acknowledges that some members of our community are under-served by other support programmes  and therefore likely to be impacted more severely by the cost of living crisis. For this reason we invited applications from organisations working with priority groups:

  • Minoritised communities and/or
  • Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities and/or
  • People experiencing homelessness and those in temporary or insecure housing and/or
  • Households which include people with a disability, or those suffering ill-health, which has a direct impact on household income and an ability to meet food and energy bills.

We awarded nine large grants of up to £15,000. These grantees included:

  • The Pickwell Foundation – to support refugees in Northern Devon who are not accessing support through other channels for electricity bills, food and basic clothing, shoes and household items.
  • Food in Community CIC – to deliver food, fuel and shopping vouchers to people from all the priority groups in South Hams and parts of Teignbridge.
  • Churches Housing Action Team (CHAT) Mid Devon – to provide access to essential resources like food, energy vouchers and reliable advice on housing and debt management, for those experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity or financial hardship.

We also awarded 15 small grants of up to £5,000. These grantees included:

  • Wellbeing in Action – to provide vouchers and essentials such as food, clothing and household items to families in South Devon, particularly Teignbridge.
  • Bthechange CIC – to provide essential support such as food parcels and emergency heating and electricity credit for minoritised individuals, with a particular focus on women leaving prison and transitioning into communities in Exeter, East Devon and Mid Devon.
  • Esteem Team CIC – to buy items such as dehumidifiers and electric clothes airers for families which include someone with additional needs and/or who struggles with their mental health.
