GIVING FAQs

Should I start my own foundation or grant making charity?

Not before talking to us. We are normally the most effective and economic option. However, if we are not the best solution for you, we will be honest and say so.

Are my dealings with Devon Community Foundation confidential?

Absolutely. All financial information is kept strictly confidential. You can choose whether or not to be identified in any documentation and your grants may also be made anonymously.

What percentage core cost do you apply to donations ?

The contribution for flow through donations is up to 15%. This can vary depending on the level and detail involved in the administration of your fund and how tailored the service is. For endowed funds we apply a set up contribution of up to 1.5% on inception of the fund and then 1.5% annually at the beginning of the financial year. This covers all costs associated with administering your fund, including investment fees, fund promotion, assessment, due diligence, grant payments, monitoring and evaluation. Do remember that Devon Community Foundation is a charity, so the contribution supports us to deliver our mission to strengthen communities and tackle inequalities.

Who makes the decisions about which charities our named fund will support?

If you have chosen to allocate your donation to one of our pooled funds, decisions are made by our experienced assessors. If you have a named fund then the panel will be made up of you and/or your family. If you are a business or organisation, then you can nominate employees for the panel. Where appropriate, there may be scope to bring a member of staff onto the panel, or a representative from the community you wish to support to bring their lived experience and knowledge.

Can I top up my fund?

Yes. Many of our donors add to their fund throughout their lifetime and there is no set-up contribution required on additional donations.

What If I decide to change the direction of my giving and philanthropy?

With a named or bespoke fund we invite you to meet with us every year to review your aims and objectives, and expand or narrow the focus of your giving depending how your philanthropy is evolving. In our experience this is an important part of any philanthropic journey because as you fund more groups and learn more about their work, it is very common to want to evolve the aims and objectives of your fund. We will always ensure donors’ funds align with the broad themes identified across Devon where our communities tell us they need the most support.

Can I add a gift in my will?

Yes. Many of our donors who have established a named fund have written a gift into their will which ensures a lasting legacy to the communities of Devon. Do get in touch if you would like to discuss this further.

My family/our employees want to fundraise, can you help?

We can provide online donation tools that are branded so your clients, customers, or wider family will know it’s you, and with all the required governance, data protection and fundraising regulation required.

Can I talk to some of your existing donors?

Yes, our donors are always happy to share their positive experiences of working with us.

What if I want to give outside of Devon?

We understand that your philanthropic objectives may extend outside of Devon to support organisations across the UK. We can achieve this by working in partnership with our network of community foundations, which reach into every postcode in the UK.

Can I just have a chat to explore this further?

Yes, please do! We’re always happy to chat over the phone or meet up for a coffee. We can discuss your interests, our services and identify whether we are the best option to support your giving. If not, we will tell you and try to connect you with another solution.
