We started the year by tuning into BBC Radio Devon for a series of interviews about our Devon on Earth grant scheme.
Our chief executive, Ceri Goddard MBE, was on the Caroline Densley programme on New Year’s Day talking about the work of Devon Community Foundation and particularly how our Devon on Earth fund supports organisations working with communities to tackle climate change and improve their local environment. This was followed over the course of the week by interviews with four Devon on Earth grantholders.
These included No Toy Left Behind, a not-for-profit community organisation which saves toys from landfill by restoring preloved toys for new families to buy. Beth Steele and her daughter gave listeners an audio tour of the toyshop in Axminster.
“It’s like an explosion of toys,” said Beth. It’s really bright and colourful, and we’re really proud of what we’ve achieved. Ideally it would be nice to think we were doing a little bit to reduce waste in Devon. It’s a tiny little thing that we can do, but it’s really fun! This project isn’t just an environmental project. It’s also important in a cost of living crisis in that we can support families, who are on a lower income to access all these lovely toys.”
Hakeford Woods, Totnes Bike Hub CIC and Mid Devon Wildlife Wardens were also featured, talking about the different ways in which they are engaging their communities with the environment and the impact this can have.
“Community is where the power is,” said Jess from Mid Devon Wildlife Wardens. “Because not only does it connect wildlife and start that restoration and repair of nature, but it also connects people.”
