After nine years of service as the Bishop of Exeter and as a Trustee for Devon Community Foundation (DCF), the Reverend Bishop Robert Atwell is preparing to step down from his positions.
Throughout his time as Bishop and as a Trustee for DCF, Bishop Robert has worked tirelessly to promote social justice, address rural affairs, and advocate for those in need. We reflect on his significant contributions and the impact he has had on the community.
As Trustee for DCF, he has played a pivotal role in raising awareness and encouraging philanthropy to support our community. He has shown immense compassion and has always been passionate about rural affairs. Fellow long–standing DCF Trustee Caroline Harlow shares some words on behalf of the Trustees regarding The Bishops time with DCF:
“A thank you letter to Bishop Robert from the Trustees.
Bishop Robert, when you joined our DCF Board as a Trustee in early 2015, you had just been installed as Bishop of Exeter. We did not realise what an inspired decision we had made when we asked you to join us. How right this decision was has become increasingly obvious during the last 8 years. Fortunately the Diocese and the County of Devon cover exactly the same, vast, area. Your deep knowledge of the County, ability to connect people together, your constant wise counsel and wisdom, compassion, generosity and love of all things Devon, quickly became invaluable.
However, you kept the best until last. When you were summoned to the House of Lords in September 2021 we really saw the passion you have about the rural communities in Devon and for their welfare. You were a fearless champion for rural Devon in many debates and gave our Board a deep understanding of rural and social issues at at a national level. As Trustees, we will miss you hugely and truly hope you enjoy the happiest of retirements. Thank you Bishop Robert for all you have bought to DCF, over the last 8 years. You will be hugely missed.”
Bishop Robert’s dedication to social justice has been a defining aspect of his tenure as both Diocese of Exeter and DCF Trustee. As a member of the Church of England’s Social Justice Commission and the convenor of the Bishops in the South-West region, he lent his voice to various causes, championing the rights of the poor and marginalised. His involvement with various initiatives displayed his commitment to combating issues like poverty, homelessness, and discrimination. His efforts not only raised awareness but also inspired action, making the diocese a more just and equitable place.
One of The Bishop‘s final acts was to address the housing crisis in rural and coastal communities. Recognising the severity of the issue, he calls for systemic change and the government to take proactive steps. You can watch his full speech in the House of Lords here.
Throughout his time in office, Bishop Robert oversaw the development of several impactful projects. These include Devon Pilgrim project, and social justice work through Transforming Plymouth Together. Additionally, he provided steady guidance and leadership to Devon’s 600 Anglican churches during the challenging times of the pandemic. Bishop Robert has also demonstrated an unwavering commitment to education and charitable causes. He is the patron of various charities including Plymouth Marjon University, YMCA Exeter, St Petrock’s, and Devon Historic Churches Trust. His support has played a significant role in advancing the missions of these organisations.
Beyond social justice, Bishop Robert Atwell also holds a keen interest in environmental stewardship. As a vocal advocate for climate change, he raised awareness about caring for our planet and sustainability.
There is no doubt that his legacy will endure for generations to come. His dedication to social justice, rural affairs, and community development has left a lasting impact on Devon and beyond. His ability to bridge the gap between spiritual leadership and social advocacy has been an inspiration to many, encouraging a more compassionate world.
While his retirement marks the end of an era, Bishop Robert’s passion and conviction will undoubtedly continue to inspire. DCF celebrates his contributions, and we know that the values he upholds will continue to shape and influence actions.
