Plymouth & Devon Schools Sailing Association in Plymouth is #enablingdisabledpeople
The Clare Milne Trust was established in 2002 by Clare Milne, who sadly died in 2012, with funds derived from her grandfather, A A Milne. Clare herself had a disability and had therefore experienced the benefits of well run and committed charities. Since 2008 the Trust has chosen to work closely with Devon and Cornwall Community Foundations to deliver small grants to effective charities, with good volunteer support, working with disabled people.
Plymouth & Devon Schools Sailing Association are one of the charities that have benefitted from this support. As well as helping young people from local schools to access sailing opportunities they are also a RYA “Sailability” Centre, which means they are able to offer support for sailors who have physical or mental disabilities. A small group of adult sailors, with various mobility problems, meet each week and are able to take to the water in a specially adapted open sailing boat. The group received £1,000 towards a lift hoist which enables users to control their own descent and lift between boat and shore, helping to ensure disabled sailors such as Bill, an ex-serviceman, get the most from their sailing time while building their confidence and general wellbeing.
“Since the hoist was fitted getting in and out of our sailing boats has become much easier and safer.”
