Trevi House

Trevi House is a residential rehabilitation centre based in Plymouth exclusively for mums and their children. Staff there have been working 72-hour live-in shifts in order to minimise any possible spread of coronavirus.

Its sister facility Sunflower House is a non-residential centre that now offers all its services remotely. Training, groups and activities such as:

  • Freedom Programme
  • Recovery Maintenance
  • Power Parenting
  • Creative Therapies
  • Mindfulness
  • Be:Active

are all available online and further support and 1-1 appointments are being delivered by Zoom and phone.

Staff at Sunflower have been delivering survival packs including food, hygiene products & children’s activities, and looking in on women they usually support at the centre, at home.

Its third setting is Daffodil House, a residential parenting assessment centre that despite opening only recently is currently full and receiving many enquiries - due they predict, to fewer fostering placements currently being available.

They told us:

“The women we support are in recovery from addiction, mental ill health, domestic abuse, sexual violence and / or criminogenic behaviours. Most of our women will be disproportionately affected by Covid-19. Many are characterised by extreme levels of poverty, living in some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the UK. 46% of the women have children, some who have been taken into care. Since the lockdown, alcohol use has increased by 22%; domestic abuse is on the rise. We already know of some Sunflower women contracting Covid-19 and are deeply concerned for women’s and children’s safety both physically and mentally.”

Our Community Insights Team spoke to the team at Trevi recently to find out more about exactly what the pandemic has meant for them and the women they support, and what’s next. You can read their full Covid-19 briefing on addiction and their other weekly reports here.

We have been proud to be able to support Trevi’s incredible and vital work for women and children during this difficult time with a grant from our Devon Coronvirus Response & Recovery Fund.
