Community Foundation Supports Those Effected by Hurricane Harvey

With great sadness we have seen Hurricane Harvey’s numerous devastating effects on families and businesses. In response, it is fantastic to see a Community Foundation doing what Community Foundation’s do best: channelling support from those who can and want to give, to those who need it.

Like Devon Community Foundation, for over 20 years Greater Houston Community Foundation has helped donors expand their philanthropic impact, partnering with individuals, families, corporations and more to extend their giving in new ways, with greater results.

Throughout the Foundations’ history, they have supported and administered disaster philanthropy when the region has needed it most. Over the years they have administered the Bush Clinton Katrina Fund, The Hurricane Ike Recovery Fund, as well as the Storm Relief Fund of 2016.

As the devastation from Hurricane Harvey is felt across the state, the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund has been set up by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and is ready to spring into action.

The Fund has already received $11.5 million in donations, with an additional $17.5 million in commitments and is focused on the immediate and long-term relief efforts in Harris County and Houston. The distributions and grants will be made in support of the Fund’s charitable purposes: relief efforts to aid the victims of the flooding and other damage caused by Hurricane Harvey, including shelter and temporary housing needs, food and supplies, healthcare, transportation, child care, facility needs of child care and social service agencies, and other purposes approved by the advisory committee and consistent with the Fund’s charitable purposes.

This is one of many important philanthropic efforts across Houston and Texas that will support those in affected areas whose lives have forever been impacted by this disaster. Because of the immense need in and around Houston, this Fund is dedicated to filling the gaps that are not met by other local and federal efforts.
