Christmas Unwrapped – Elderly

â–  150,000 pensioners live alone in Devon.
â–  Over 80s will increase by 80% over the next 7 years.

A raft of festive activities at Bucks Cross Village Hall, near Bideford will provide a lifeline over Christmas for the elderly community in the remote rural area where 70% of the population are over 60. The hall committee is planning a Christmas lunch, drama and craft evenings including wreath making. “Going to the hall has allowed me to meet up with people I don’t normally get to see. It is a point of contact and has made such a difference to our community and to me,” says Anne. Since 2008 DCF has donated over £4,000 to the hall. “It is constantly in use by the community. There is nowhere else like it near by and some people travel quite far to come to our events,” says elderly resident Mr Tuner.

Devon Community Foundation has supported 214 groups this year which support lonely and isolated elderly people and bring them together.
